Neff Press Custom Applications: Turnkey

Project: Turnkey 75 Ton C-Frame Press with tooling
Final Product: Catalytic Converters

Our Mission: A Tier 1 Automotive supplier approached Neff to supply three 75-ton C-frame presses for a piercing application with catalytic converters.

Our Solution: Neff provided three modified 75-ton C-frame presses and tooling to this customer. Each press was built with additional throat, cut-out back plate, an elevated hydraulic power unit, and special guarding.

Generation III Computerized Shaft Straightening Press:
Part Transfer Automation
4-Post Press Design
Tooling and Fixturing

Project: Turnkey Fully Automatic Computerized Shaft Straightening Press
Final Product: Compressor Shafts

Our Mission: Neff recently designed and manufactured a third computerized shaft straightening press for a St. Louis based company in order to eliminate costly manual straightening of casehardened compressor shafts. The shafts are of various diameters and lengths.

Our Solution: Neff specified a 15- ton column press. Neff designed tooling and material transfer systems to automatically load each shaft from a 100-shaft capacity magazine. Once in the tooling fixture, the shaft is gauged at three critical locations using electronic data acquisition. The straightening computer then determines if the shaft needs to be straightened and by how much. The gauging gives real-time feedback during the straightening process to allow precise control of the straightening head. The computerized data acquisition system is capable of storing run-time data for an entire month’s worth of production. Additionally, a computerized operator interface allows adjustment of all required straightening parameters (i.e., maximum run out, maximum straightening attempts, etc.). Neff’s straightening press is capable of producing over 250 shafts per hour straightened within the desired .003” run out requirement.

Automated Press Line:
50-Ton C-frame Press
Guided Tool Mounting Plate
Pedestal-Mount Operator Console
Air Feed System Integration
Light Curtain Guarding

Project: Turnkey Press Line with 50-Ton Neff C-Frame Press
Final Product: Consumer Photograph Mounting Products

Our Mission: To design a system to produce finished parts from strip material.

Our Solution: The project integrated a Neff 50Ton C-frame press with a decoiler, straightener, air feed system, tooling and press safety system in order to provide our customer an automated turnkey system. All peripheral equipment was sourced and Neff Press mechanically and electronically integrated all with the press.

The result was an automatic system that produced higher quality end products at a much higher rate than the replaced manual processes.

Our Mission: The end customer, and Medical device manufacturer required a special 150 ton 4-post press. The press needed to have very accurate control/repeatability regarding force generated (+/- 75 lbs) on a 150 ton press. The application was a “clean room” (class 100,000) environment, so special consideration was needed regarding possible contamination. The press would be integrated into a work cell with a conveyor moving the product from one piece of equipment to another. Neff needed to supply a moving work support that automatically positioned itself underneath the platen for this powder compaction application. The press needed to have proportional speed and tonnage control with programmable dwelling and controls which were Ethernet compatible and the ability to set compression tonnage from a remote PLC.

The Solution: Neff supplied a H150-15M hydraulic 4-Post press with several unique criteria. The bed size was 46” L-R x 12” F-B with 24” (16” net with movable work support) of daylight. Protective bellows were put on the cylinders, guide pins, bearings, etc to meet the clean room criteria. Neff supplied an interlocking guided “wedge” design work support system. The lower wedge was driven by a horizontally mounted auxiliary hydraulic cylinder, which raised the upper wedge (which raised the work piece). Speed control for the horizontal cylinder was included and proximity sensors were integrated to ensure the wedges were in the proper position for both pressing and conveying. Neff also provided a 6”x 6” pressing head that was made of A-2 tool steel, ground flat within .0005” total and polished to a finish of 4-6 RMS, per the customer specification. Neff included its standard Automatic Single Stroke option which allows an external signal to trigger the press to actuate.

Neff has over 40 years of experience manufacturing, engineering and integrating industry standard components to solve customers manufacturing needs. Contact Neff Press at 800-325-8612 for further details on this application or on many others.
